If you've talked to any clothing manufacturer about your designs and they've asked for your "Tech pack," and you weren't quite sure what that meant — you're not alone. It's one of the first pieces of industry jargon new founders run into, and also one of the most important documents in the entire manufacturing process.

This guide explains exactly what a tech pack is, why it matters more than almost any other document you'll create for your brand, and how to put one together even if you have no design software experience — plus what a basic template should include.

What Is a Tech Pack?

A tech pack (short for "Technical Package") is the complete technical blueprint for a single garment. It's the document a factory uses to turn your idea into a physical sample, and later, into consistent bulk production. Think of it as the instruction manual for your design — everything the factory needs to know without you standing next to them explaining it in person.

A complete tech pack typically includes:

• Flat sketches — front and back line drawings of the garment (not a fashion illustration, a technical flat)

• Measurements/spec sheet — a detailed grading chart with exact measurements at every key point (chest, waist, sleeve length, hem, etc.) across all sizes

• Materials list (BOM – Bill of Materials) — fabric type, weight, composition, and all trims: zippers, buttons, labels, thread color

• Construction details — stitch types, seam finishes, and any special construction notes (topstitching, reinforced seams, specific hem finishes)

• Colorways — every color variation the style will be produced in, with reference codes (Pantone or fabric swatch reference)

• Placement details — exact positioning for logos, prints, embroidery, or labels

Why a Tech Pack Matters More Than Founders Expect

New founders sometimes assume a good verbal description or a Pinterest mood board is enough to get started. In practice, a missing or incomplete tech pack is the single biggest source of:

• Inaccurate quotes — without exact specs, a factory can only estimate cost, and estimates tend to run either too high (padding for unknowns) or too low (missing details that get added later as costly changes)

• Sample rounds that don't match your vision — the flat sketch and measurements are what the pattern maker actually works from; a vague brief means more rounds of samples, more time, and more sampling fees

• Sizing inconsistency — without a clear spec sheet across sizes, grading (scaling a design up and down) can produce a fit that's inconsistent from size to size

• Miscommunication across languages and time zones — if you're working with an overseas manufacturer, a visual, numbers-based document avoids the ambiguity that written descriptions can create across language differences

A well-built tech pack doesn't guarantee a perfect first sample, but it dramatically reduces the number of costly revision rounds it takes to get there.

You Don't Need Professional Software to Start

Founders often stall out here, assuming they need expensive CAD software before they can even approach a manufacturer. That's not true for a first draft. A workable starting tech pack can be built with:

• A simple flat sketch, hand-drawn or built in free tools like Canva or Google Slides

• A basic spec sheet built in a spreadsheet, listing measurements at each size

• Photos of fabric swatches or reference materials, with notes on composition and weight

• Clear written notes on any construction details that aren't obvious from the sketch
